PS5 Linux is here! GTA V with Ray Tracing, 60FPS at 1440p, RPCS3 and more on PS5 Linux!

theflow0 has ported Linux (Ubuntu 24.04) to PS5 and PS5 Pro. It runs GTA V with Ray Tracing, RPCS3, Spider-Man at 1440p 60FPS and more.

PS5 Linux using the Byepervisor exploit is finally here! Andy Nguyen (theflow0) recently shared the news with gameplay videos on Ubuntu 24.04 on PS5. You’d know theflow0 as an active developer in the community. If not, this news article will jog your memory.

Right now,, you will need a PS5 with low firmware to run Linux. We will cover that later in the article.

Gameplay on PS5 Linux

theflow0 shared a few videos and screenshots of running Windows games on PS5 Linux. Here, they are.

The screenshot shows a playable FPS of 30, which is quite impressive, given on PS4 Linux, we haven’t yet been able to achieve something like this yet.

How good is PS5 Linux?

Consider this build a starting point. But, once we have more devs working on it, soon, you can expect more distros, tutorials and such for PS5 Linux. theflow0 confirms that presently all the USB ports and 4K HDMI (Audio and Video) work perfectly on PS5 Linux.

Moreover, he has also made a PR on Mesa’s Git to upstream PS5 and PS5 GPU (GFX1013) support for Linux.

He also confirms that during his testing, the PS5 CPU was clocked at 3.2 GHz and the GPU at 2.0 GHz, with the option to clock it to its full potential, i.e., 3.5 GHz for CPU and 2.23 GHz for GPU. Andy’s PS5 Slim did overheat though. The metal thermal paste isn’t cutting it, I think.

How to run Linux on PS5?

Details are awaited on complete instructions to get Linux running on PS5. But, theflow0 does mention that it will require a full-chain exploit like Byepervisor. This means currently, PS5 Linux can only be run on PS5s on low firmwares. Byepervisor currently supports 2.xx firmwares, So, if you are on a higher firmware, you are currently out of luck.

Keep an eye out. I will be posting more when it’s available.

Conclusion

Since PS5 Linux is already here, I have also added a PS5 Linux section to the forums for discussion.
