4K Kernel for Linux on PS4 Pro by saya and mircoho (Work in Progress)

4K (3840x2160) kernel for PS4 Pro (Belize) is here, thanks to saya and mircoho. Watch a video of Oblivion gameplay at 4K resolution on PS4 Linux.

4K resolution on PS4 Linux has been a constant demand among the users. Unfortunately, for a long time, no one was working actively on it. But now, thanks to saya and mircoho, we have 4K-capable Linux kernel for PS4 Pro (Belize). It isn’t clear if this will work on Aeolia PS4s, but, feel free to test this out.

As for saya and mircoho, these are household names in the PS4 Linux community, especially when it comes to low-level (kernel and payload) development. All that being said, these kernels are still a work in progress. But, it’s great to see that there’s still active development going on behind the scenes, not only on PS4 distros, like the 4 new PS4 gaming distros by elokuba and the new distros by triki1, but also on kernel and development, the one in this article being a prime example, along with the newly released kernels with WiFi (CUH-12XX) and blackscreen fix by feeRnt.

This is the link that was shared by saya. It’s a zip archive. You can extract it and try these kernels out. Check out how you can replace kernel on PS4 Linux, if you are new. These kernels also feature full LTO and zram support, which also adds performance.

To show what the kernel is capable of, saya shared a video showing the new kernels playing the game – Oblivion while the PS4 Linux’s display resolution was set at 4K (3840×2160). Here is the video and if you look closer at the 4-5 seconds mark, you can clearly see the neofetch command output the resolution – 3840×2160.

Conclusion

saya and the KHEOPS team are also working on many new kernels and improvements for the PS4 including GPU-level enhancements mainly targeting the enhances capabilities of the PS4 Pro GPU (Gladius). I will keep you posted when more information is available. In the meantime, subscribe to saya’s YouTube channel above to stay updated.

    • Now that you say it loud, even I am wondering that. But, yes, saya and mircoho have managed to do it at the kernel level, I believe. My intuition would also have been to look at altering the payload.

      • It never gets to the sign in screen,I lose signal but see the ps4 pro lights flashing as well as the external ssd light as it would normally to indicate the distro is running

    • I use it with:
      – a PS4 Pro Belize 2 9.00
      – a PS4 Pro Belize 2 11.00

The PS4 menu configuration is included in the package as images.

You need to be using a fixed 3840×2160 resolution, not automatic, HDR enabled, a PS4 Pro, and of course a 4K monitor…
If you can’t get 3840×2160 RGB in the PS4 menu, but only 3840×2160 YUV420, it won’t work, and you’ll have to disconnect/reconnect the HDMI from your TV and check again… if that doesn’t work… change your HDMI cable, it’s crap.

Once you’re on the Linux distribution’s desktop, if the display doesn’t fully display on the right side, simply restart the user, and the problem will disappear. will be erased.

By the way, if anyone has a 4K 100Hz or 4K 120Hz TV and a PS4 Pro from Belize, I have a bzImage for them to try…

I’m basing this on resolutions included in the source kernel I use to compile this bzImage… I successfully compiled the 1080p 120Hz bzImages.

I no longer need to recompile the bzImages for my future release… I’ll release the next bzImages within a month.
