Zram makes the system much more faster and feels more full pledge linux system.
Because of the Processes speed.
Logic:
From hdd to ram to hdd vice versa = bottleneck.
Factual:
Estimation etc...
PS4 internal Hdd generally offer around
75-88 MB/s read/write speeds, limited by the SATA II interface,
PS4 Pro Hdd if upgraded to ssd, still
generally offer around
550 MB/s read/write speeds, limited by the SATA IlI interface.
While:
Ps4 has a
GDDR5 memory speed of 176 GB/s,
Ps4 Pro has a 218 GB/s speed.
Both consoles use
8 GB of GDDR5.
Enter Zram.
DDR5 Speeds theoretical bandwidth of approximately 38.4 GB/s. For Zram
But limited to compression algorithm used with LZ4, Zstd etc...
Are the fallowing decompression speeds commonly exceed 1000 MB/s and can reach upwards of 2000 MB/s in fast modes. And this is estimated per 1 core only. Ps4 have 8 cores.
That is fast!, but not may explanation 😁
So no more back and forth from the slow hdd. And originally hdd is for slow i/o stored data.
Also hddswap setup will shorten your hdd/sdd lifespan.
Inshort
( Zram for ps4/pro is really recommended ) not only for efficiency, stability but for Longability.
Thank you for reading this long explanation🙂
Special thank you to:
Saya for bzImage with Zram, more.
Elokuba for CachyOS and updates.
Noob404 for this web, forum, technicals.
And the all the ps4 dev/modders since the beginning.
