First off, the goal of this thread is to be a kind of "mega thread" for any and all headset issues anyone might have. I intend to keep this initial post updated with solutions (once they are found) to any headset issue encountered and posted in this thread.

So to kick off, I am having an issue when trying to use headset for in-game communications. I have a Plantronics Explorer bluetooth device, it connects and can be accessed in pavucontrol but cant figure out how to pipe audio to it. I have used this same device on linux in the past, after some unremembered fix. I also have a Logitech H600 headset w/ usb key. It seems to connect ( dunno how to check for sure) but doesnt show up in pavucontrol at all. I suspect the fix for the Logitech device would be adding kernel support, but I'm currently having issues compiling a proper bzImage and feel that particular issue doesn't belong in a 'headset mega thread"

misfit-mischief I'm assuming it's a firmware related issue. My guess would be to lookup "Plantronics Explorer Headset firmware" in google or another search engine. If a firmware exists for this specific headset, then look under the main linux firmware site and see if that firmware is added to it. If that firmware exists in the main firmware line then it has support under the 'menuconfig' when you compile a new linux kernel. Make a new 'initramfs' file with the firmware added and compile a new 'kernel' toggling on the headset firmware and you should be good to go. If you can't find a firmware file or kernel support for it... well then that headset is probably not compatible.

Zabovis The Plantronics is a bluetooth device, so I assumed something bluetooth related would be the issue. I think I might be narrowing in on the cause, or at least learning what doesnt work lol. I have tried compiling kernel with support added for the logitech headset but when I go to locate the file in arch/x86/boot it is listed as a DOS/Windows executable. misfit-mischief Odd that the BzImage is outputting as an ".exe" file. Does it work? None of the BzImages I've made had an ".exe" extension.

Zabovis No it does not seem to work, ps4 led stays white. Try this. Use the usual kernel. Go to pavucontrol and somewhere in the Devices tab, you should find that the Bluetooth headset is connected as A2DP. Try changing it to HSP/HFP and see if it brings up the microphone.

misfit-mischief DOS/Windows executable = ".exe" . exe is a suffix for exe cutable file. I would look at the file type of your functional bzImage to see if there is any difference in the file type. For comparison, my bzImage file type is listed as a binary file. See screenshot below:

noob404 This was my first thought too. The bluetooth device is set to HSP/HFP codec cvsd, in fact its the only profile that shows up in pavucontrol. The device shows up in the output/input tabs but there is no audio output or mic input. When connected I "lose" audio output thru tv so it seems it is pulling the stream but for some reason can not properly route it. Zabovis I had to compile on an old desktop with ubuntu installed. I also tested both headsets on that machine and they worked out of the box.

So I just tested a Skullcandy JibXT (it has more profiles in pavucontrol, a2dp included) and using a2dp profile properly routes audio rom tv to earbuds but does not show up in input tab. Switching this device to the hands free profile renders it as useless as the plantronics device but while on this profile both devices show up in the input tab. Scratching my head raw on this one lmao. Side note: these issues are occuring on fedora ps4, but not on ubuntu desktop.

misfit-mischief Side note: these issues are occuring on fedora ps4, but not on ubuntu desktop. I’m assuming it’s a communication issue between the kernel and the intramfs files on the PS4. Which explains why it works on your desktop but not on your PS4. I would make sure the bzImage file you’re compiling for your PS4 is a binary file and not an executable file. Long term, if we’re able to get official kernel support for the PS4, issues like this would be a thing of the past.

General Headset Issues

Zabovis I can't seem to find any toggle that would determine output, but I'm also not exactly sure what I would be looking for tho.

Only thing I see that may be related is compression mode, its currently set to (xz). This is straight from the 5.4.213 whitehax0r source after cp config .config command.

Side note: I have a ubuntu install on an old desktop that I was able to compile a proper kernel on. I followed the exact same process (from Noob404's tut) on both the ubuntu desktop and fedora ps4. It compiled fine on ubuntu but never fedora lol.

Also unfortunately I tried to compile a 5.15.15 belize on the ubuntu desktop but it always returns an error.

noob404 Yea I tried it to see if it would boot but it did not.

A weird side note, I copied the "dos" kernel to a usb and looked at it on ubuntu desktop to see if it was also listed as dos executable and it was not. This leads me to think it might not be a compile issue but a file association issue.

Another side note, I used ubuntu desktop to modify the 5.4.213 kernel just fine, but when I tried to modify the 5.15.15 for kevin I kept hitting an error.

I am by no means a linux guru but after 2 weeks of research I am stumped lol

That's the error I keep running into. This is on fedora ps4 so I didnt expect a working kernel but I get the same error on ubuntu desktop.

noob404 I have tried to compile the 5.15.15 belize on ubuntu 22.10 (desktop) and on fedora 37 lxde (ps4).

Update: After much Googling I think I may have discovered the underlying cause behind the issue with fedora ps4 compiling the bzImage as dos executable. Assuming what I found is correct the issue stems from the distro being built in efi mode. Unfortunately I remember having all kinds of issues trying to build the distro without the efi partition.

I haven't yet found a cause for the ubuntu pc issue when trying to compile the 5.15.15

kevinF None yet, sorry. No matter how many times I try to pull a clean source the 5.15.15 kicks back an error when i go to compile it.

You could try patching it yourself, maybe you would have better luck. Just follow the tutorial for adding drivers and when it comes time to find the toggle this should be it.

misfit-mischief and as for the 4xx belize kernel, have you tried it? If I'm not mistaken the usb headset doesn't work on the 4xx either..

misfit-mischief I decided to try to compile 5.15.15 belize but after I use make menuconfig and access the "USB sound devices" there's nothing there it's empty why?

kevinF I haven't tried the 4xx but it should be the same toggle in make menuconfig across all kernel sources. The only reason it wouldn't be able to be added is if the option is not in the source.

kevinF I think the 5.4.21x is just for baikal, can't seem to find a belize fork in whitehax0r github.

You might ask saya in discord, they dont seem to have any issue compiling kernels.

kevinF There is none. Aolia and Belize have 5.15 (Codedwrench's) and those wth additional patches from saya, Yoshi, etc.

kevinF That is odd. The only thing I can think of is maybe it was a bad git clone. I just checked on the 5.15.15 source I was trying and the usb sound devices sub menu has the option.

kevinF I would try the git clone command in terminal, just make sure to create a folder specifically for it and open the terminal from there.
